Issue One, Page Ten

This page was inspired by Hamilton, the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. More specifically, the second song of the show, "My Shot", is a rousing, boisterous number where the main character tells his new acquaintances his dreams for the future - it's the "I want" song that you see in almost every musical. At one point during the song, the music completely stops and Hamilton says very quietly "Oh, am I talkin’ too loud? Sometimes I get excited, and shoot off at the mouth..." - it's a small, quiet moment of self-awareness and self-reflection for the character, who has been loudly exuding braggadocio up to that point in the song. So this page was my attempt to change the tempo of Steamroller Man's song - to basically stop it in its tracks. Without sound, I attempted to do this visually by using a single, full-bleed (borderless) panel, and using a black background rather than white, to really contrast against the rhythm of the previous multi-panel pages. I also removed the speech balloons here so that the text would be white-on-black rather than the black-on-white of previous pages. I wanted it to feel like we were in Steamroller Man's thoughts, as he got introspective. Of course, this being Steamroller Man, I still had to have it be a little wacky, and so I added the cosmic "memory images" of his smiling faces floating above him in space. This was influenced by bad '80s portrait photography and the Three Wolf Moon meme. Did I succeed? Let me know in the Comments! I hope you're enjoying the comic!
