Issue One, Page Five

Here's the guy everyone's been waiting for! Steamroller Man is back - in his secret identity of Steve Rollerman, of course! With a special cameo appearance by internet meme sensation, Distracted Boyfriend! THIS PAGE HAS GOT IT ALL!! This page names Steamroller Man's home for the first time as Kurtzberg City. Legendary comic creator Jack Kirby's real name was Jacob Kurtzberg. It also seemed a plausible name for a city as you occasionally see city names ending in "burg" or "berg". Jack Kirby's work, and his philosophy towards his work, are a huge influence on me as I create this comic, and so this was my way of making some small tribute to him. I purchased some new brushes for Clip Studio Paint while working on this page, and started to experiment. I'm really liking using an ink wash effect on the backgrounds. It's quicker than doing zip-a-tones or crosshatching, and to me, it gives the art a look somewhat akin to 2D cel animation. Let me know what you think in the comments section!

  1. Hi Matt, Fun character and artwork. I did work with Jack Kirby when I was young. He was designing characters for H&B in the late 70’s and I was a layout artist back then. I also worked with Alex Toth and Doug Wildey. Fun Times!

    1. Hi Mark! Wow, I had no idea you worked with Jack Kirby, Alex Toth and Doug Wildey – that’s amazing! Those guys are legends!
