Here's my latest re-draw. I did the original in Clip Studio Paint - it was one of my earliest efforts and I was still teaching myself to use the program. For the redraw, I went back into the original file and oh boy, what a mess - let's just say I had no idea how to organize my layers!
The first thing I noticed when looking back at the original page was how the first panel contained three word balloons, in a somewhat awkward arrangement. Sugar Daddy is walking to the right while the balloons curve back to the left - I really was learning page-by-page (and still am). It immediately occurred to me that I could split each of these into a separate panel, and not only create a better visual flow to the page, but also use the increased panel count to do some visual storytelling. I wanted to show Sugar Daddy actually in the process of preparing his magical dough, rather than just talking about it. "Show, Don't Tell", as the saying goes. This also afforded me the chance to drop in a couple of additional little gags. I don't know whether anyone even knows what a
dandy is anymore - the word certainly isn't in common usage these days - but Sugar Daddy certainly counts as one, and I quite liked the wordplay of "The Fancy Dandy's Guide to Candymancy".
I'm much happier with this new version, even while knowing there are things I'll look back upon in another three years and think "oh dear, what was I thinking?" I guess that's both the pleasure and pain of artistic growth.
I hope you like this new page, it's now posted in the correct reading order
here.
On to the next one!
Cheers,
Matthew
